That was not fun. The offense played poorly overall. Nuss can make a phenomenal throw, and later he can fail to see the field well, or throw a slightly inaccurate ball and it stalls a drive. The o-line faced a 3 man rush and they still got to Nuss. I think Harlem Berry moved up to RB1. Kaleb Jackson had a decent run, but he needs to work out on the jugs machine. The D played well, but Kiffin had Baker's number, the OM scheme worked well. Come end of the season, I'd replace Brad Davis as o-line coach, Joe Sloan, and whoever they brought in as run game coordinator.
Here is my evaluation 4 games in.
The silver lining for LSU is that 3 other top 10 teams were upset this weekend also (Georgia, Penn State, and Florida State, but I think we easily fall out of the top 10.
We have our work cut out for us if we have any chance of making the playoffs.
- Nussmeier is just not that good of a QB. I'd say he is average at best and no way lives up to any of the hype of him being a
candidate or 1st round draft material.
His decision making is poor way too often, which makes me think he is not spending enough time in the film room, etc.,. It doesn't help that the plays being called in are not the best...more on that below.
- It's time to replace Brad Davis with someone who can take all of the 3, 4, and 5 star OL recruits and coach them into an effective and cohesive unit. Brad Davis has been a loyal Tiger coach to a lot of kidsand I am appreciative for everything he has done for LSU over the years - including being interim HC between Orgeron and Kelly.
But I think he has reached his peak and for several years the OL has under performed and has been one of the weakest units on the team. It can't run block for the life of them nor can it protect a less than mobile QB from a 3 man rush featuring a former Tiger.
If Sam Pittman's days are numbered at Arkansas, I hope we move fast to snatch him up. Remember that Prior to Arkansas, Pittman was OL Coach at Georgia (also Assistant HC), Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
- Our play calling sucks. Does Sloan's ability to recruit North Louisiana outweigh the fact that that opponents with far inferior talent outperform LSU's offense on a regular basis? We don't really try to establish any type of running game and our passing game is anemic and at times desperate.
Our offense cannot generate sustained, clock eating drives that wear down our opponents' defenses. Instead, we are seeing SEC opponents start to do the opposite. Denbrock knew what he was doing and developed Jayden Daniels into the QB he is today...Sloan is an inferior OC to Denbrock on every level. Can Kelly talk Tommy Rees into leaving the Cleveland Browns for LSU?

I am tired of BK saying "we have to play complimentary football" like that is some sort of answer that yields some information to the question. It's what you might say if you don't want to say the direct truth, "our offense sucked". To hold OM to 24 points with as many plays as they ran was good. If the offense had sustained some drives, like if we had a ground attack, we probably would have won. Fix the offense. Then you won't have to bitch about "complimentary football".
