Arkansas fired Sam Pittman and promoted Bobby Petrino as Interim Head Coach...Deja Vu all over again.

Arkansas interim head coach Bobby Petrino has fired three defensive coaches since taking over after Sam Pittman was fired on Sunday.

On Monday, it was reported that defensive coordinator Travis Williams, defensive line coach Deke Adams, and co-defensive coordinator Marcus Woodson are no longer part of the staff.

I wonder where you get competent college level coaches in the middle of the season?

From the Arkansas AD:

“Coach Petrino… I mean, he accepted this opportunity with the understanding that he also wanted an opportunity to formally be a candidate for our head coaching position, and he will have that opportunity,” Yurachek explained. “But we’ll also subsequently run a search for our next head coach at that same time. And I’ve got a little bit longer runway to do that and do my due diligence and do some really good research.”

Penn State fired James Franklin after 3 straight losses. They were in the playoff last year! Short leash given to a coach with six years left on his 10 year contract, IIRC. Those 10 year contracts are not working out so well, think Jimbo. aTm gave Elko a six year deal. Bama had to give Deboer 8 year deal.

That is pretty shocking, but in all fairness he was an overrated hire to begin with. Impossible expectations at Penn State...2 hires removed from JoPa.

This will be interesting to watch as it is a 'blue blood' program.

"According to multiple reports, Penn State will owe Franklin a buyout in the neighborhood of $50 million after firing him. The exact number is more than $49 million. It will be the second biggest buyout in college football history, behind the $76 million Texas A&M paid to Jimbo Fisher when he was fired in 2023."

I'm guessing we won't see them anymore, unless you get another coach of Saban's stature. I think he had a long term contract at Bama, after he had won a couple of natty's, and he was worth every penny of it. I think the university community is looking at those buyouts and deciding for themselves, let's go for six years for a coach with a good record. Deboer at Bama got 8 years because he just had his team in the natty game. We don't know how that will work out, he still has some of Saban's players.

I haven't seen anything to indicate colleges have any intentions of slowing down with the spending.

They're spending big bucks, but I have not seen a new 10 year contract since Franklin, Brian Kelly, and Lincoln Riley, all the same year. Clemson gave Dabo a new 10 year deal in 2022, but he had won 2 natty's by then and the team was usually in the hunt for the conference championship at least.

Urban Meyer said he thinks Penn State over reacted when they fired James Franklin. I agree with Meyer.

he would have never lasted this long if he was at an SEC school.

Ed Orgeron (2017-2021) went 45-18, won a National Championship and got fired
James Franklin during that same stretch was 42-19

Dan Mullen (2018-2021) went 34-15 at Florida and got fired
James Franklin during that same stretch was 31-17

Gus Malzahn went 68-35 over his 8 seasons at Auburn and got fired
James Franklin was 67-34 over his first 8 season at Penn State

In 11 full seasons and 1 partial, Les Miles went 114-34, won a National Title, made it to another title game, 3 division championships, 2 SEC championships and got fired.
In 11 full seasons and 1 partial season, James Franklin went 104-45. 1 division tiltle, 1 conference title, zero national championship game appearances.

against B1G opponents ranked in the Top 10 (AP poll), he's 1-18 at Penn State. That only win was all the way back in 2016.
against all Top 10 opponents (again, AP poll) he's 4-21 at Penn State.
Just for comparison's sake, KENTUCKY has more Conference wins and overall wins against the top 10 over the last 4 seasons than Penn State does over Franklin's entire Tenure.

Orgeron won a natty in 2019, put a bad product on the field in 2020 and he was not fired in 2020. In 2021 he put an equally bad product on the field and it was announced that he was terminated after a 4-3 start in 2021. That is 19 games he was given after winning the natty, and all 19 of those games were poor. Franklin started 3-0, lost to #6 Oregon in double overtime, then lost 2 more games. What your record was 3 or 4 or 5 years ago has little or nothing to do with firing decisions. It's what have you done for me lately, and you have to past the eye test, what does the team look like right now, how are they playing. But Orgeron got 19 games and it appears the PSU AD made his mind up in 3 gemes. After the 3-0 start to this season, certainly there was no talk of firing Franklin and paying him $50 million to leave then. The decision was made based on the last 3 games.

you don’t make a $50mil decision based on 3 games.

again, if this was an SEC school, he never would have made it this long.

literally everyone i mentioned above was at worst equal to Franklin and got canned.
