AD Scott Woodward leaving Verge as interim

I disagree with the decision to fire Woodward and I agree this is a shit show.

What Woodward did at A&M should be off the table and NOT any consideration for his performance at LSU. ONLY his actions at LSU should be considered in any performance review or job evaluation.

I don't think that is the case with the LSU Boosters that always want control over the program or the idiot governor and his cronies who all want to play Huey Long on TV.

As I see it, Woodward's biggest screw up was giving Orgeron the big payday after the perfect season. The Kelly contract I'd argue was a distant second.
  • It appears to me that the Orgeron contract may not have had the 'Duty to Mitigate' clause and allowed Orgeron to sit back and collect the checks while being the clown show he is. It may not have also had morals clause as he was not fired for cause when he tried to hit on the LSU administrator's pregnant wife at the gas station (assuming that story is true - which I tend to believe it is).
  • The Kelly contract was market rate at that time and had a ridiculous level of guaranteed money. However, he learned his lesson with the Orgeron separation and added in the 'Duty to Mitigate' clause and the morals clause, which word on the street has allowed LSU to negotiate down the buyout from a figure in the 50s of millions of dollars to a figure that is likley to be in the 20 millions of dollars or less.
His biggest sin? I think that would be the stigma of Jimbo's contract coupled with the "$54 million" that the media keeps repeating as a mantra that Kelly is owed (but will eventually not get). The testicle-less governor feels embarrassed and feels the need to assert his masculinity to overcompensate for his small manhood.

If Woodward gets hired by an SEC rival (think Florida or Ar-Kansas) and turns one of those programs into a premier SEC program, LSU fans might feel like they did when Bama hired Saban.

Worse because Saban left of his own accord and would've come back had Leslie not turned in two straight 11 win seasons.

To support your post, I again present the following...which took place PRIOR to Woodward hiring Kelly.

From wiki:

In November 2021, Mel Tucker became one of the highest-paid coaches in college football history, receiving a guaranteed 10-year, $95 million contract from Michigan State, the third-largest contract ever given to a football coach at a public university.[4] In September 2023, following allegations of sexual harassment, Tucker was fired by Michigan State.

1st...I enjoy the implied ribbing! LOL!

This reinforces the fact that the contract Woodward offered Kelly was "market price" for the time.

Guess what...it's more expensive now.

What Woodward did at A&M should be off the table

or we could do this really wild idea and use actual facts.

2 years after Woodward was already employed by LSU, Ross Bjork (now tOSU Athletic Director) gave Jimbo Fisher a raise and an extension.
THAT is the ridiculous buyout Jimbo had.

Bjork's buyout paid Jimbo Fisher more money in buyout alone than the entity of the 10 year year contract Woodward gave him.

I’m embarrassed for our state over this debacle. It has been managed by amateurs. LSU is the one thing in our state that brought us all joy and happiness despite the ups and downs of a season. Now a bunch of selfish, narcissistic individuals may destroy that. We have no prez, AD or head football coach. Instead we have a small minded idiot going around on national programs showing how stupid he is and very likely alienating every good coach who may have considered coming here. I’ll hope for the best but I’m expecting the worst. Go Tigers!!!

ok, I'll start by saying that I don't disagree with the moves that have happened.

Kelly absolutely had to go.
Woodward probably did too.
The two most important hires an AD will ever make is Football and Men's Basketball coaches. Sure baseball is bigger at LSU, but Basketball brings in a ton more revenue.
And in those 2 revenue generating sports, Woodward whiffed.
You don't typically get a 3rd chance at a major school.

Zero ribbing intended, seriously.

Tucker had nowhere NEAR the resume of Kelly at that time. Should he have been offered a lesser contract? That was the market. Shit that was the market for a Mel Tucker level hire.

now on to the shitshow (leaving non-LSU related politics out of the discussion)

HOW this is all happening is an absolute embarrassment on a National Stage.

The governor has told anyone who would listen (even actively searching out more listeners) that HE fired the football coach.

He then tells everyone that HE won't allow the AD to make the next move.
and then HE fires the AD.

that right there makes this job look toxic as fuck!
what coach in his right mind wants to work for the Governor and his political cronies?

Landry then doubles down
He's on the trail spouting straight up wrong info (who am I kidding they're outright LIES).
He talked about the state (i.e. taxpayers) being on the hook for the buyout.
In reality, LSU Athletics has been completely self sufficient and has been for many years. It's been since at least the late 90's and maybe farther back than that, since the Athletic department has taken a single penny from state coffers or student fees. Not a single cent of any sports related expense is on the state. Not one.
He then uses Jimbo Fisher's buyout as a knock against Woodward. In reality, that buyout was negotiated by Woodward's successor (Ross Bjork). That new buyout was so extreme that when Jimbo was fired, six full seasons after Woodward hired him, that the buyout was still higher than the totality of the contract Scott had negotiated with Fisher.

Landry then goes out on the TV/Radio circuit to make things even worse.
He calls out coaching agents. Specifically and by name, Jimmy Sexton and Trace Armstrong. The two guys that represent basically any coach worth a damn in America.
Follows that up by straight up saying that LSU is no longer going to give out big contracts to coaches and deals will all be smaller and heavily based on incentives.

So now, he has the major agents we will need to deal with pissed off at us.
And coaches immediately know they ain't getting paid here.

the pool of interested candidates is shrinking by the minute.

the one guy worth half a bucket of piss that would still crawl across broken glass for this job is right down the road at Tulane (Jon Sumrall).
have no fear, the Governor found a way to squash that before it happens too!

on the radio, Landry say HE probably wouldn't allow that move. Said it's not a very good look for the Flagship School to steal a coach from an in state school.

in a span of roughly 3 days, Jeff Landry turned LSU from what was universally being called the hands down best job opening in the country to a toxic cesspool that nobody will want to touch.
We're basically relegated ourselves to a mid Group of 5 level opening.

LSU is once again in 1980's-1990's era where politics and the "good ole boy" network is completely running the show.

Friend of mine who lives in Boston called my laughing about how silly our governor is shooting his mouth off about things he knows nothing about. I sure hope a good candidate surfaces to run against him.

I saw this on the net, I think from a Friday AM news conf.

"The Board of Supervisors will officially announce a new university president on Tuesday, according to Ballard. They have narrowed it down to three finalists for the job.

Ausberry said that they assembled a coach search committee, which includes Ballard, Carmouche, as well as Ben Bordelon (Bollinger Shipyards CEO), E.J. Kuiper (FMOL Health President and CEO), and another member yet to be named."

I hope they are just getting names together and judging interest in the job, and not picking the coach. It does not look like a lot of football knowledge there.

Ben Bordelon was a 4 year starter on our O-Line in the 90s
Ausberry played LB for LSU in the 80s.

To add to Bordelon, he literally has a son on the team now and has another with a national championship ring from 2019.
And his wife is the hot blond that danced at the white house with the team after 2019
