The LSU circus

so naturally, LSU somehow ends up with their top target.

and really, we can probably thank Ole Miss for out circus-ing us for him ultimately coming here.

Ole Miss screwed this up and nobody seems to be pointing out how badly they managed this.

LSU (and Florida) is who "needed" an answer quick from Lane, not Ole Miss.
But Ole Miss is the school that publicly set a deadline and ultimatum.
and Lane has been pretty clear that he wanted to coach this team throughout the playoff run.
LSU allegedly was OK with that, but Ole Miss dug their heels in the sand and wouldn't even consider it.

Money was allegedly roughly equal.
NIL funds were supposedly very close.

if Ole Miss had sat tight, their odds of keeping him would have skyrocketed.

instead of saying "make your decision right now! you're either here long term or get the fuck out!", they should have taken the "do NOT make a decision now. we know the money is right in line. Stick around and ride this thing out to see what we can accomplish here"

then, the deeper Ole Miss gets, the harder and harder it is for LSU to wait.
and the more and more attractive Ole Miss as a long term residence can look to Lane.

one school was telling him exactly what he wanted to hear.
one school was telling him literally the exact opposite of what he wanted to hear.

I disagree. OM had to look at it objectively. What is the better job, OM or LSU. You can try all you want to keep him, but he's probably going to go to LSU. If you let that drag on too long, then you get in the coaching carousel too late and all the good guys are taken. Want proof? OM head coach is now Pete Golding, who was not on anybody else's list even. All the really good candidates are gone. Yet OM needed to make a decision because the signing starts this week and kids want to know who the head coach is.

I agree with Nootch

If I'm Ole Miss, when Lane says "I wanna coach through the playoffs", I'm saying "you got it, buddy".

LSU nor FU is waiting for long. They fill their jobs and at the end of the season, he's either staying at OM or going to the league.

maybe he still goes, or maybe LSU bails because we can't wait until January to even know if our candidate is actually available.

they forced Kiffin to decide "right now!" which according to a lot of reports helped lean Kiffin even harder towards LSU and they ended up with Pete Golding.
when they could have held their cards, increasing their chances of keeping Kiffin. If he leaves, you end up with .... Pete Golding.

they had a head coach who they basically pushed out the door and seriously hindered their chances of keeping him.

they pretty much voluntarily jumped into a hiring pool with schools Like LSU, Florida, and Auburn.
and sorry, but Ole Miss will never be higher than 4th place out of those 4 options.
and they basically begged to get in that mix.

win 1 playoff game and you force LSU to wait until after signing day and the day before the portal opens at the earliest to get their guy.
win 2 playoff games and you're halfway through the portal window is the absolute earliest LSU can make their hire.
make your way to the finals and everything is over, signing day over, portal closed before LSU can make a hire.

no fucking way we wait that long.

Also you say "if you let that drag on"... well they did lol. Would've been smarter to let him coach it out and THEN promote Golding if he bolts. You seem to be implying they couldn't wait so they could get in front of it. They didn't wait, and STILL didn't get out in front of it. Not sure how that's anything but complete failure.

Roll the dice, let him coach and see what happens. If they did that, I almost guarantee he is at Ole Miss next year and we have Dillingham or worse.

You made my point. OM did not have a realistic chance to hold him, and they knew it. They were fourth out of LSU, Fla. and Auburn. They would not allow a silent deal where Kiffin told LSU he would come after the playoff. They would be the last school looking for a coach and that was not acceptable. If the coach is probably going to leave anyhow, you need to begin your search immediately. To name Golding the head coach the next day, they already had their move made in their heads, Kiffin was leaving and they didn't lose Golding also. OM was under the same pressure to hold recruits as LSU and Auburn and Fla.

Not forcing Kiffin's hand, which allowed them to make their head coach move quickly before the early signing day, would have just tied up OM works for weeks, and then they would lose him anyway.

There was no option to keep Kiffin and OM knew it, He never signed their extension and they knew what that meant.

If that was going to happen, he would have signed the extension with OM. He did not. OM knew what that meant. He was leaving, period.

I see commentators like Bill Cowher raking CLK over the coals by saying how ridiculous it was for Kiffin to expect that OM would even consider letting him coach his team through the playoffs.

But Tulane allowing Florida's new coach to do the same...crickets.

It's effing Tulane.
Nuff said.

He ain't taking Tulane players with him to Florida and he ain't recruiting kids that might have gone to Tulane anymore.

Apples to cranberries.

I know OM couldn't let him sign with LSU AND coach OM through the playoffs. But they should've told him up front here could coach the team through the season and THEN could sign with another team. Without a signature, LSU and Florida wouldn't given up.

you’re assuming LSU and Florida would have held their offers indefinitely. Which neither one would have done.

You can’t go into signing day without a coach.

LSU and Florida would have been forced to make a move, not Ole Miss.

HUGE difference between those 2 situations.

Florida and Tulane are not in same conference, are not annual opponents, and will not recruiting against each other very much.

Tulane having Florida’s head coach walking around their ops building, talking to their players, having access to all their computers, contact, etc. isn’t ideal, but also not something they’d be overly worried about because their paths don’t cross.

Ole Miss having LSU’s head coach walking around their ops building, talking to their players, having access to all their computers, contact, etc. is a really really big “FUCK THAT!”
