Hokies fire coach Brent Pry after starting 0-3 play

Virginia Tech has fired coach Brent Pry on Sunday, a day after a 45-26 home loss to Old Dominion in which the Hokies were booed loudly while heading to the locker room for halftime.

Saturday's loss dropped Virginia Tech to 0-3 on the season and 16-24 through four seasons under Pry. He is set to be owed more than $6 million in his buyout.

"Blacksburg will always hold a special place in our hearts," Pry said in a statement. "We leave with wonderful memories and lifelong friendships, and we will forever be cheering for the Hokies."

In a statement, school president Tim Sands said the change was "necessary" due to on-field results described as "not acceptable."

The hot-seat talk bubbled up around Pry in November last season, and if the Hokies had lost to Virginia to end the season, a change may have been made at that point. But Virginia Tech defeated Virginia, and Pry's second consecutive 6-6 regular season landed him in a bowl game.

Although the offseason included personnel changes, the talk around Pry's status didn't fade. He entered Year 4 with a new defensive coordinator -- Sam Siefkes, a former linebackers coach with the Arizona Cardinals -- and a staff that included former longtime Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster as an adviser/analyst.

It did not work in the early going. Though the Hokies played hard in a season-opening loss to South Carolina, they were pushed around by another SEC team, Vanderbilt, in Virginia Tech's home opener a week later. The Commodores scored 34 consecutive points to close out a 44-20 win in which they trailed by 10 points at halftime.

That loss, however, proved to be just an opening act to Saturday's stunning loss to in-state foe Old Dominion.

"Clearly, it starts with me," Pry said after the loss to the Monarchs. "Coaches, players, everybody is accountable here. We've got to get back to the basics and find a way to be closer to the team we can be."

Offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery will serve as interim coach, while Sands pointed to a need to "develop a financial, organizational and leadership plan that will rapidly position [the program] to be competitive with the best" in the ACC.

"The new framework for college sports will be fully established for next season, so this is the time to make a major move," Sands said.

Virginia Tech hosts Wofford on Saturday before beginning ACC play the following week at NC State.

This is Virginia Tech's first 0-3 start since the first year of Frank Beamer's 29-year run that put the Hokies on the map nationally, notably with a trip to the national championship game behind star freshman quarterback Michael Vick in 1999 among Beamer's 23 bowl appearances.

Beamer's run ended in 2015 and the Hokies played for the ACC title a year later, but otherwise the program has struggled for traction and hasn't cracked the AP Top 25 in four years.

The school hired Pry in 2021 after eight seasons as the defensive coordinator at Penn State. He signed a six-year, $27.5 million contract at the time of his hiring and was making $4.75 million this season.

Athletic director Whit Babcock hired Pry in part to follow Beamer's philosophy of recruiting in-state prospects, a strategy that worked well during Beamer's long and successful run. But only three of the Hokies' starting 22 players in the Vanderbilt game were from Virginia. Overall, just six of the starters were high school players recruited by Pry, with the remainders arriving as transfers.

Virginia Tech went 1-12 under Pry in games decided by one possession, while the Hokies haven't beaten a Power 4 team in a nonconference game since 2017 -- a run of 15 consecutive losses.

UCLA fired coach DeShaun Foster only three games into his second season, the program announced on Sunday. Foster, a former All-American running back with the Bruins, finishes his tenure with a 5-10 record, including 3-6 in Big Ten matchups.

The Bruins were coming off of a 35-10 loss to New Mexico on Friday, one of the lowest moments in program history. New Mexico was viewed within the program as a winnable game and a chance for Foster to get things turned around heading into a bye week before their conference schedule and another seemingly winnable game vs. Northwestern, a source told CBS Sports. Instead, they gave up 298 yards rushing in a devastating loss.

Now, UCLA is at serious risk of becoming the first power conference team since 2015 to go 0-12. The Bruins have given up 108 points in three games under second-year defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe. UCLA special assistant to the head coach Tim Skipper was elevated to interim coach, the second straight year he held such a role after working as interim coach at Fresno State following the health resignation of Jeff Tedford.

"I want to extend my sincere appreciation to DeShaun for his contributions to UCLA Football over the course of many years, first as a Hall of Fame student-athlete, then as an assistant coach and finally as head coach," UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond said in a statement. "He was named to this role at a challenging ime of the year, on the cusp of a move to a new conference and he embraced it, putting his heart into moving the program forward. His legacy and love for this university are firmly established. He is a Bruin for life, and we wish him, his wife, Charity, and their family the best."

Foster was hired as UCLA's coach in 2024 after former coach Chip Kelly left to take the offensive coordinator role at Ohio State in February. Because of the late cycle, there were few options readily available for the Bruins, so they turned to the program legend. He served as running backs coach with the Bruins from 2017-23. He had formally left UCLA to take a job in the NFL, but returned when he was named head coach.

UCLA enters a bye week before traveling to play Northwestern on Sept. 27. The Bruins have three games against ranked opponents left on the schedule, including games against No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Penn State.

I wonder what Nico Iamaleava thinks of his decision to leave Tenn. now? Nobody would touch Nico after he tried to hold up Tenn., UCLA took him since they needed players.

he got his money, and that's all he seemed to be worried about.

Wonder if VT goes after Shane Beamer?
It'll be interesting to see who they go after and when they fill the vacancy. Firing a HC so early in the season limits who they can go after if they want to fill the role quickly.

Every time I see Saban on College Gameday wince at a Pat McAfee comment I think he second guesses his decision to retire...lol. If I were the Hokies, I'd go after Dan Mullen and give him at least a 5 year "no fire" contract, maybe longer.

Of course, the media throws out options like Michael Vick, etc.,.

Isn't Mullen at UTEP now? Or somewhere like that

Dabo is not even trying to point out the flaws in his team that need to be worked on to turn the season around. Instead his logic is "But look what I've done for you. You out to be ashamed of yourselves for calling me out." Fans don't want to hear that. They want to know how you plan to turn it around NOW!!! Clemson is not going to fire Dabo.

Bayou Billy - Just a gut feeling, but I believe FL sticks with him for the whole season.

Belichick - The UNC football program is going to the doctor today. Worst case of buyer's remorse the football world has ever seen. Bill is finding out that its much easier to date college age kids than it is to coach them!!! If the downward spiral continues, I could see a mutual parting of the ways at the end of the season. Does any other HC have his significant other out on the sidelines before the game? Nothing prohibits that but its a terrible look.

Thank you Dabo, God has entered the discussion:

"This isn't what we expected, but I don't think it caught God by surprise," Swinney said. "That's just what I believe, and we'll rally, the open date is coming at a really good time for us."

Okie State doesn't have the cash it used to have.
I feel bad for Gundy, but I don't feel bad for him
Boone Pickens gave Ok. State athletic dept 165 million in 2005, but Boone is dead now. I don't know the state of their NIL, but it probably took a hit after Boone passed. Gundy followed Les Miles, so he has been the head coach for a long while.

They still have plenty of money for what they are and the conference they are in. Ragweed is doing another show in the spring (probably 4 shows) and that should help to keep the coffers full enough to recruit/fill out a competitive roster.
