Next Head Football Coach of LSU

ok, here's my quick list (subject to change as time goes on)

Obviously, you give Saban a call to see if he's interested.

after that, in no particular order
  • Brent Key - Georgia Tech (47 years old)
  • Clark Lea - Vanderbilt (43 years old)
  • Ryan Silverfield - Memphis (45 years old)
  • Jon Sumrall - Tulane (43 years)

So, I was just working with a patient's phone with his hearing aids and a news flash came on it - That Jimbo Fisher was being considered for the LSU job.

Please tell me no.

lazy journalism.
not 0% chance, but not much higher than that either.

I saw an article that put Lincoln Riley as a dark horse candidate with the reasoning that he doesn't seem to fit in the B1G and is underwhelming the SoCal fan base.

now THAT's funny.
the guy that ducked and ran from the SEC as fast as he could in '21.

Also, you want to talk bad buyouts?
His buyout is north of $80 million this year (and his record is worse than Kelly's at LSU).

  • Brent Key - Georgia Tech (47 years old)

the more I look around, this is my guy.
He's the one I want.

His resume is almost exactly what I think we should be looking for.
  • He's been an OC, TE coach, OL coach, RB coach, special Teams Coach, and Recruiting Coordinator.
  • He's been nominated for the Broyles award 4 times as an assistant.
  • His OLines have been nominated for the Joe Moore award 3 times with him as OL Coach.
  • He worked under Nick Saban (multiple SEC titles and a Natty while there).
  • He's at a "little brother" school with a very good record (26-16 as of today).
  • His teams are physical and NASTY.
Looked up his salary at Ga Tech, and it's "only" $4.5 mil through 2029.
I think we can tack 2-3 years to that and get him somewhere above $8mil per for 6-7 years (no clue what future buyouts will look like after the coaching carnage of this season).

Couple issues though.
He's al this Alma Mater, so not sure how "available" he is.
Georgia Tech has a very favorable schedule the rest of the way and will likely be in the playoffs (meaning even if interested in the gig, he wouldn't come over until sometime in January at earliest).

Or he could leave them in the middle of the playoffs like Kelly did............ducking.......
well ND wasn't in the playoffs that year, so Kelly didn't leave until after their season was over.

and again, this dude is at his Alma Mater. I don't see him leaving in middle of a playoff run.

I love giving you a hard time, but typically believe you're in tune to reality.

But then you added Saban to your otherwise decent list, which was only missing the most obvious best choice.

Saban is literally a consultant for Alabama. IDC what he said about leaving LSU being the biggest regret or mistake of his career. He made that mistake 21 years ago and was at Alabama 17 years building a legacy THERE. He's a friggin G ump!!!

you me and everyone else knows Saban will say "no".
plus he's a short term fix.

but you make that phone call. Mrs Terry says no, then you move on to the real list

my list has the best choice on it.
Save the quarter, it's absolute silliness and a waste of time. Screw Saban.

I like Key. Top 3-4 on my list.

But y'all are insane to not have Lane on your list because he was dumb when he was younger. There is no better offensive mind currently in CFB.

Tell me about Key's QB development historically.

It really doesn't matter because you yourself listed the reasons he wouldn't do it. You admit you're choice isn't based in reality. Do better, bro.

just guessing what will happen.
you and me both know that call will be made. he'll say "no" and we'll move on.

I'm just acknowledging that, not advocating for it.

landing Lane will most likely require the kind of contract we just bought Kelly out of. maybe even a bigger one because we won't be the only ones calling him.
I'm not sure that will get approved again. Not even for Lane.

Me not having him on my list is reflective of that more than anything else.

the HC himself doesn't have to be the one developing the QB.
Key is a successful OC and OLine coach. He shores up that side of the ball.
the OC or QB coach will be responsible for developing the QB specifically.

I don't know his intentions.
I know we can probably fall just shy of DOUBLING his current contract and tack a couple years on what he has left at Ga Tech.

That contract would still fall at less per year, and less overall guaranteed than we signed Kelly for. It would also still be for fewer years.

Key would then move to the biggest Conference with the most eyeballs in the land. And he would be at THE school in state rather than 2nd fiddle.

Maybe he stays at his Alma Mater, maybe he doesn't.

That is the kind of profile I would like to see.
