LSU doesn't have the TV contract ND has, but the LSU football program historically has been very profitable. $54 million is a lot of money to pay for a buyout but it's digestible over a few years.
Kelly's contract has a "duty to mitigate" clause, meaning the total buyout he is owed is reduced by what he earns from any new football-related employment. If he gets hired at another program, the going market rate for NCAA head coaches will dictate that Kelly is fairly compensated for his services.
Kelly will be motivated to salvage his reputation and there are programs that will be eager to talk to the "winningest active coach in NCAA history" (on paper).
A real world example...let's say Matt Campbell gets hired elsewhere and the Iowa State job becomes Brian Kelly's. Campbell was making over $5 million/year. Assuming Kelly accepts a similar deal, LSU would owe the difference between what he made at LSU and what Kelly would make elsewhere. I think Kelly was making $9.5 million/year at LSU. LSU would then be on the hook for less than half of the reported $54 million buyout at that point.
It's about to get interesting in the coaching carousel.

Wisconsin is apparently waiting to fire Luke Fickel, so that one will probably open up also. (Kelly would be great fit there.)
Once the hirings start in earnest, more programs will open up with vacancies needing to be filled. Nebraska HC Matt Rhule is rumored to be the favorite for Penn State, if that happens the Nebraska job becomes vacant, etc.,.
I think the bottom line is that the $54 million buyout will wind up being less than what is being reported. Note also that LSU and Kelly are reportedly negotiating a settlement on his buyout.
This is kind of like a lotto winner wanting the lump sum up front instead of a check every year for the next 20 years. LSU could offer a deal where Kelly agrees to take 25% up front instead of waiting for 6 years worth of checks.
That may be tempting to Kelly if he realistically can land new gig upwards of $5 million per year fairly soon.
