BK FIRED (Sloan too)

LSU doesn't have the TV contract ND has, but the LSU football program historically has been very profitable. $54 million is a lot of money to pay for a buyout but it's digestible over a few years.

Kelly's contract has a "duty to mitigate" clause, meaning the total buyout he is owed is reduced by what he earns from any new football-related employment. If he gets hired at another program, the going market rate for NCAA head coaches will dictate that Kelly is fairly compensated for his services.

Kelly will be motivated to salvage his reputation and there are programs that will be eager to talk to the "winningest active coach in NCAA history" (on paper).

A real world example...let's say Matt Campbell gets hired elsewhere and the Iowa State job becomes Brian Kelly's. Campbell was making over $5 million/year. Assuming Kelly accepts a similar deal, LSU would owe the difference between what he made at LSU and what Kelly would make elsewhere. I think Kelly was making $9.5 million/year at LSU. LSU would then be on the hook for less than half of the reported $54 million buyout at that point.

It's about to get interesting in the coaching carousel.

Currently open:
  • LSU
  • Florida
  • Penn State
  • Arkansas
  • UCLA
  • Oregon State
  • Oklahoma State
  • Virginia Tech
  • Stanford
  • Colorado State
Wisconsin is apparently waiting to fire Luke Fickel, so that one will probably open up also. (Kelly would be great fit there.)

Once the hirings start in earnest, more programs will open up with vacancies needing to be filled. Nebraska HC Matt Rhule is rumored to be the favorite for Penn State, if that happens the Nebraska job becomes vacant, etc.,.

I think the bottom line is that the $54 million buyout will wind up being less than what is being reported. Note also that LSU and Kelly are reportedly negotiating a settlement on his buyout.

This is kind of like a lotto winner wanting the lump sum up front instead of a check every year for the next 20 years. LSU could offer a deal where Kelly agrees to take 25% up front instead of waiting for 6 years worth of checks.

That may be tempting to Kelly if he realistically can land new gig upwards of $5 million per year fairly soon.

I like that move. Some were suggesting Hankton.
I honestly had forgotten Rattay was even on the staff (as an analyst).

we'll see how this works out rest of the way.
He's an Air Raid disciple. No clue what we're going to do offensively with him calling it.

That is actually what i thought would happen first before we fired BK but I am ok with both

no inside info here, just a guess:

Woody gave Kelly options to keep his job (through the remainder of the season).
Kelly being the condescending prick he is didn't take kindly to that and out of spite refused.

So Woody said "deuces!"

so listening to a few podcasts this morning (and putting together pieces from the hints they dropped).

my hunch in my last post probably isn't far off.

Starting Sunday morning, Kelly's seat was very, very warm. But not yet scalding.
A meeting happened (Kelly and Woodward?). That meeting did NOT go well.
Woody and Kelly were not on the same page (may not have even been in the same book).

From there, things escalated quickly.
Kelly basically took the stance of "what are you gonna do, fire me?"
Woodward then started talking buyout. Kelly demanded quite enthusiastically for the entire $53 mil+ (likely thinking there was no way LSU would come up with that money right now)
Woodward got the BOS, the Governor (because LSU has an interim President, that guy's boss got the phone call), and Boosters on the horn. Money was raised quickly.
Scott informed Kelly to pack his shit and leave.

This was not a pretty divorce either.
Aside from the on field results. BK was a smug hardheaded asshole that thought he had all the power.
Woodward showed who actually had the power in this situation.

Kelly managed to lose pretty much everyone wearing Purple and Gold.
he pissed off the upper administration.
he pissed off all the money people.
and he completely lost the fanbase.

There were virtually zero endearing qualities giving him any sort of leg to stand on.
and he got what he deserved.

From what I've read the buyout is payable in installments of $800,000.00 pre month until the remainder of his contract is paid believed to be $54M. The contract has a mitigation clause for anything he earns related to football. Being reported that they are trying to negotiate a lump sum payment so LSU ( meaning "us" not "they") can get it off the books. So eat more Cane's !!!
