I'm seeing noises about trying to get Nick Saban back. That would be great I'm sure, but it seems unlikely. However, he might have someone he would recommend, and given his track record developing coaches, he'd be a good guy to listen to. I'd take whoever he recommends over a "splash hire."
last time Nick recommended someone to LSU it was Houston Nutt.

Instead of going for a name coach with pedigree, i. e. and older guy, I think we should look for a younger up and coming coach with a good track record. Somebody with the energy to lead the program and relate to the kids. Think Nick Saban at Mich St. aTm is doing good with Elko, but they had him as DC for 3 years, then 2 years as head coach at Duke. They don't have to come from a premier program. A guy like that might come for a 4 year contract, and take his shot at earning an extension every couple of years.

no chance anyone we'd want will sign a 4 year deal.
1st, nobody will be interested in signing a deal for shorter than his first full class' eligibility.
2nd, the rest of the country is still offering longer deals worth guaranteed money. In an industry famous for saying "it's not IF you'll be fired, it's WHEN", nobody better than a crap shoot is taking a cheap way out.

I know I'll be in the minority here, but I want a defensive minded coach (that still fields a solid offense).

It's Clark Lea, probably. But my hesitation with him is he's more of a motivator and CEO type. I'd like an actual savant on one side of the ball so you don't have to be perfect on both coordinator hires, so...

couple of the guys on my initial list are at their Alma Mater.
Lea followed Mike Elko from Wake Forest in 2017 to Notre Dame as an LB coach. When Elko left for A&M after one year, Kelly promoted Lea to DC, his first coordinator position.
Kelly’s track record when promoting from within was a bit uneven, so that gave us pause. For about two games into a 12-0 season.
It was clear that Lea was an excellent DC, despite having no experience. Above all, his defenses were fundamentally sound. Great tackling, disciplined, forced turnovers, never seemed to get rattled.
Lea was a good recruiter, too. He was my favorite coach for the three years he was at ND, and I was sorry to see him go when he left for Vandy.
So don’t let that poker-faced Tom Landry demeanor fool you into thinking that he’s a CEO type who manages from afar. He rolls up his sleeves and gets dirty every week, and he knows his stuff. He was an outstanding DC before he was an outstanding.HC.
