Next Head Football Coach of LSU

It ain't happening, so don't worry
I know.
the contract that would take is probably even bigger than the one we just bought out.
you know the one the entire fanbase bitched and complained about? The one the governor said would never be done again at LSU?

but honestly, looking at the list of openings (see my other thread), this is going to be another EXPENSIVE hire.

or will be our 15th choice.

I'm hoping that the meddling by people like Landry do not lead to another Curly Hallman for us.

I had never even heard of Nick Saban when we hired him. Brian Kelly wasn't on anybody's list when he was hired. It literally could be anyone especially adding the complications with our governor opening up his big mouth.

LSU needs to try to get out in front of this PR shitshow somehow.

Because right now it looks like LSU wants the new guy to be:
  • cheap
  • very easy to fire
  • the governor may step in behind the AD's back and secretly fire you if you don't qualify for an event that hasn't existed for over a decade now
  • doesn't have Jimmy Sexton as an agent

that's not the public perception that's bringing in the best of the best as far as candidates are concerned.

Nootch and I had a private discussion where I mused that Woodward might be going for Brian Kelly (as an option). We both put it in the "probably won't happen" bin, but a few days later...

Tomorrow, they announce the new LSU President.

Hopefully, by the end of the week we have a well respected AD hired.

probably take longer than that for the AD if I had to guess.
Pres gets announced but doesn't take over until January

With NIL and the portal we are likely to have a bunch of 9-3 SEC teams every year. That is not guaranteed a spot in the playoff.

I'm just going to throw this out there:
we fired a guy who only lost more than 3 games three times in his 11 full seasons as coach here.

since then, we've had
a guy who did that 3 times in 5 full seasons
a guy who did it twice in 3 full seasons

That is a true statement, but it leaves out so much information as to be meaningless.

When Miles took over from Saban, he did NOT have to rebuild the team. Saban left on his own, he was not fired.

When O took over from Miles, the team had been floundering which is why Miles was fired.

When BK took over from O, the team had floundered for 2 years and there were only 39 scholly players on the team in Jan. 2022. With the portal it was quicker to build the team up, than having to wait for recruiting, but BK inherited a very thin team.

A coaches won/loss record over a short period like 4 or 5 years is heavily influenced by the state of the team when he took over.

the team went 9-3 the year year before O was hired.
the McNeese rainout would have assuredly been a win as well, so a 10 win team in Miles' last full season here.

and that's kind of my point. What was considered "floundering" by Les and warranted him being fired at end of season (when his firing SHOULD have happened) has only been equaled 3 times in the 8 years since he was canned.

would be the first time i’ve seen you support an LSU coach.
Then you didn't pay attention. I told you all who Les was before he ever coached a game for LSU. It is not my fault that you refused to listen. That doesn't mean I ever wanted the program or the team to fail, it just means that I knew he was a knot head. Great with the Jimmy's and the Joe's, not so much with the X's and the O's.

I want a coach that will instill a toughness and a sense of pride back into this team. Kelly was soft and so was/is the team. I posted a video of Fehoko a while back stating the same thing and right on cue you and your little Roscoe P Coltrain buddy jumped all over it saying it was bs. Turns out it's spot on.

I don't think Lane is the leader this team needs, great mind, just not sold on him being the one to lead, and to get this team back to being who they are supposed to be. In the end I don't really get a say but I'd go with the Greenie, get him at a bargain price and see what happens.

Now you get to tell us how they got blown out by UTSA.

and he went on the most successful 11 year run in program history.

you had your little minions all riled up begging for him to fired.
that’s not “supporting” anything.

he’s on my list that i already posted.

Fact, at that point he had run his course and it was time. You know it's true.

As for his success, that is an interesting point and you are right, he holds that title. My issue or point if you will, he always had great teams. Some would argue the best in the country but would always come in "2nd" when he ran into a team of equal talent with a more competent coach. That was never going to get better. He was never going to stop running straight into the teeth of the D even when it was obvious it wasn't working. He was never going to recruit a real QB nor was he ever going to adapt to what CFB had become.

So yes, if you want to call me out for that, not only guilty but proudly guilty as charged, Les was here at least a year too many but can't change it now.

O, God love him he somehow caught lightning in a bottle and had a team that couldn't lose, in fact if I had to pick one person on the planet that would not have won a NC with that team...you guessed it. Leslie Edwin Miles. He would have found a way to screw it up and I have zero doubt about it

Kelly, by your standards has to be a "good coach" because he's won a pile of games. He didn't work here. I was sort of perplexed with the hire but figured it was worth a shot, never saw it coming but oh well. It didn't work.

Like I said, find someone who will lead and lives and breathes football with an appreciation of what this program is. Who is it? Hell if I know.

oh he absolutely needed to go.
but you just said it yourself. you wanted him out “at least” a year earlier.
meaning when he was undefeated and ranked #2 in the CFP poll you wanted to fire him.

You wanted to fire him for something that “might” happen.

i waited until it did happen.
because you can’t fire a coach on a maybe prediction in the future.

because you have to view this from the lens of potential replacement candidates.

if sitting at 8-0 and #2 in the playoff poll has the fans up in arms and the AD ready to fire you because “well he’s probably going to screw up”, then literally nobody will want that job.

i actually called this when Herb first threw his name out there.
Even compared him to Les.
Said he would win just enough to not get fired (didn’t see this collapse coming though)

I already told you who it was.

Brent Key.

The question became, did you want 9-3 to be the ceiling of the team. Miles proved unable to get a top passing QB to come here because we didn't throw the ball. We knew could out-talent most teams at the LOS, we won. When they had equal or better talent, they could put 8 on the box, stop the run, dare us to throw, and we could not throw it, so we lost. Early in Miles tenure we had better QB's, but J. Russell and M. Flynn were both recruited by Saban. Things went downhill from there. Following the 2015 season, Alleva wanted Cam Cameron fired as OC, but Miles kept him and promised to change the offense, open it up to more passing. But he didn't do it, LSU started 2016 2-2, then Orgeron took over. They made a change that I agreed with, to try and get over the hump of 9-3 and contend for the SEC West.

I wasn't advocating for keeping Les.
I've said many times over the years that he should have been fired after the 2015 A&M game.

just pointing out that "floundering" he was doing was better than each of the last 5 season we've had now.
